The performance CHANGE draws on the experience of adolescence as a time when everything can shift before we have had the chance to understand what has actually happened. The body, moods, relationships and sense of belonging are constantly in flux, and rather than trying to resolve this instability, the performance embraces it as its central performative principle. Music, movement, text, costume and light continuously shift in their function, rhythm and relationship to one another, while the performer moves through different emotional states and invites the audience into them. CHANGE does not seek a definitive answer to the question of who we are. Instead, it asks how we can live with the fact that the answer is always changing.
The performance is the centrepiece of a broader project by SHOOMA, which uses contemporary art to support the mental health and well-being of young people aged 12–16. The development of the performance was supported by psychologists from Brave Phone (Hrabri telefon), a Croatian child and youth helpline, as well as by a focus group of children and young people from I. Primary School Bjelovar, Croatia.
